Sheathing Options Overview
Braided Fiberglass (High-Temp Braid)
- Construction: Braided fiberglass sleeving that’s heat-treated and impregnated with an acrylic binder. This reduces fraying, prevents dusting, and makes it easier to handle than untreated fiberglass.
- Performance:
• Operating range: –94 °F to ~1,200 °F continuous.
• Melt point: ~2,048 °F.
• Will not burn or support combustion.
• Extremely abrasion and cut resistant; maintains structure around irregular shapes.
• Flexible and expandable, making it suitable for routing around tight turns.
• RoHS compliant, halogen free, UL recognized (VW-1). - Use Cases: Appliance and industrial wiring, heater leads, resistors, soldered joints — and in our case, the ultimate abrasion/heat armor for ignition wires.
- Best For: Engines with extreme exhaust heat exposure, tight passes near manifolds, or customers who want that rigid “mil-spec armor” look.
Silicone-Coated Fiberglass (Flame-Retardant Flex Glass)
- Construction: Braided fiberglass core coated with a flame-retardant silicone rubber sheath.
- Performance:
• Rated to ~392 °F continuous (Class H insulation).
• Remains flexible at low temperatures.
• Flame retardant and abrasion resistant.
• Self-fitting: the silicone coating allows slight expansion for installation and helps lock the sleeve onto the wire for reduced movement.
• Resistant to oils and common chemicals. - Use Cases: Widely used in harnesses, transformer leads, appliance assemblies, and industrial wiring. For ignition wires, it provides a flexible, rubberized outer layer that’s easier to handle and keeps a clean look.
- Best For: Customers who value ease of routing, clean handling, and a sleeker finish — ideal where wires need to snake neatly around intakes, valve covers, or tight bays.
Comparison to OEM Jackets
- OEM EPDM jackets: ~250–300 °F continuous, prone to cracking and tracking over time.
- Fiberglass braid: up to ~1,200 °F continuous, abrasion-proof.
- Silicone-coated fiberglass: ~392 °F continuous, flexible, flame-retardant, chemically resistant.
- Both are massive upgrades over OEM jackets, with the braid favoring ultimate heat ceiling and the silicone favoring routing flexibility.
In Plain English
- Braided Fiberglass = industrial-strength armor, extreme heat, extreme abrasion resistance.
Silicone-Coated Fiberglass = smooth, flexible jacket that’s easier to install while still offering far higher protection than stock.
